Street Musicians
240 x 400 cm
Acrylic
2017
In the painting "Street Musicians," the artist reflects on how the energy that arises during the creation of music imparts a special mood to people. The central theme of the artwork is the perception of music, and art in general, as one of the means of knowledge, development, and personal improvement, as well as a source of spiritual and physical energy. This energy, both spiritual and physical, is the key focus of the image.
The scenes are entirely real: an elderly gentleman plays The Beatles in an underpass; a drunken sailor, with little more than his accordion, memories of his youth, and a cloud of cigarette smoke, sings with his soul as he repeatedly plays the tune of his youth. The central figure, a young saxophonist, deserves special attention – a composite image of the protagonist from the film Permanent Vacation and a minor character from the same film, a random stranger playing the saxophone on a New York street at night. He releases energy through a "wild, creaking sound" with all his strength and inspiration. A modest violinist, of whom there are hundreds around the world, persistently plays Mozart, defying the street noise. A hunchbacked, poorly dressed musician with a double bass plays melancholic jazz in an almost empty underground passage. His melody carries all the depth and sadness of his difficult journey. The central figure is depicted as the lightest spot, with colourful splashes of paint. This represents his choice in life: he has chosen music, and with it, an unstable path of doubt, growth, and living in tune with his heart's calling.
The artist employs elements of realism, cubism, fauvism, and abstract expressionism to convey the musicians’ inner states during their performances. Their entire bodies and souls vibrate, disintegrate and reform, move and freeze in sync with the melody. At that moment, they transcend their biological existence, and their emotions and actions pulse and pour expressively into the world, awakening similar impulses in others.
Art emerges from life, through feelings and reactions to events. And the reverse is also true: life can be created as art. Allow yourself to be a little crazy (within reason).
